Top Five Animated TV Shows of the 90s

Throughout our childhood, we all loved watching cartoons. I'm sure we can all remember waking up early to catch our favorite show or being excited to stay home on a school day because you would be able to watch cartoons all day before the "older kid" shows came on. Although we may not still watch cartoons as much, it's hard to deny that they were once a huge part of our lives!

5) Rugrats
My number 5 pick for best animated shows of the 90s is Rugrats. Rugrats is a show about four babies: Tommy Pickles, the fearless leader, Chuckie Finster, the scaredy cat, and Phil and Lil Deville, the gross twins, and the daily adventures that they went through. To them, they would be in a jungle or volcano or another mystical or far away place, but in reality, they were running around somewhere in their house. In other words, the show tried to show life through the eyes of a baby. Angelica, the little girl that bullied the kids, liked to get the kids to do things for her, which usually involved stealing cookies. Although the animation was horrible, the material was fun and enjoyable. Rugrats appeals to young children by showing the babies and their silly antics and pronunciation of words, and it also appeals to the adults by creating a fun and light-hearted mood. Also, the creators' abilities to include a lesson or moral in each episode is a great plus to this TV show, and it had you wondering whether you actually thought like that as a child or not. Overall, Rugrats is a great show to provide a laugh for the entire family.
4) Dexter's Laboratory
Next up is Dexter's Laboratory! In my opinion, Dexter's Laboratory was one of the best Cartoon Network shows to date. The show was basically about a boy-genius named Dexter who would escape to his secret laboratory in his room. The animation was simple with just several lines and colors, but it was the perfect fit to the show. To sum it up, Dexter's main goal was to achieve ultimate knowledge, but his experiments were often interrupted by his pest of a sister Dee Dee. Despite his intelligence, the creators showed that he is just like any other kid. He had to deal with the struggles of not fitting in at school, being grounded, and bickering with his sister, making the show seem more realistic and easier to relate to. Besides that, the show also had a bigger message about love for your family because despite how much his sister annoyed him, it was obvious that he loved her. Dexter's Laboratory not only gave a good laugh, but also a touch-of-heart.
3) Ed, Edd n Eddy

In third place is Ed, Edd, n' Eddy. Ed, Edd n' Eddy is the story about three outcast kids who don't really fit in for various reasons. These three characters usually just run around the cul-de-sac and plan out different scams to buy jaw breakers. The characters each have their own weird and unique personalities, which makes the show very enjoyable to watch seeing them all their personalities work together. Also, there are very few of them, so it's not that hard to keep up with all the different names. However, there's not much to the show. They're just typical teenagers hanging out with friends and getting in trouble while dealing with several bullies, but overall I think this show was done right, from the animations to the humor and everything in between.

2) Hey Arnold
My second favorite 90s cartoon is no other than Hey Arnold. Hey Arnold is one of the few surviving 90s shows still currently airing on TV, fortunately for me. Being born in Palestine, there were very few good shows that I could watch, and Hey Arnold happened to be one of the few kids' shows that aired overseas. Hey Arnold is about a boy named Arnold (also known as football head) who seems to be the only "normal" one in the show. He's kind hearted and is nice to nearly everyone, even those who are mean to him, such as his bully/stalker Helga. Overall, this show teaches children to be nice to others, but conveys this message through a humorous approach. Whether it's Arnold's strange grandparents, the characters' unrealistic physical characteristics, or the interesting story plots, this show never fails to put a smile to my face.
1) Spongebob Squarepants
And number one is.... SPONGEBOB. I'm sure everyone saw that coming. Spongebob stole the hearts of many kids from the 90s and even in today's world. Spongebob is the story of a sponge living in the ocean who enjoys working, jellyfishing, and helping his friends. I loved watching this show grow and change over the years. Although the story lines aren't as great as the used to be, the animations and humor have become so much better over the years. This show can put a smile on anybody's face, whether they are 7 or 70. Spongebob and his friend Patrick are never up to any good, and it's fun seeing the exciting and unexpected adventures that they have in store for us. Each character has a completely different personality, so watching all the personalities clash is one of the best parts of the show. Personally, I don't believe I could ever grow tired of watching this show.
